New guidance to schools on the delivery of PE

02 November 2020

2nd November 2020

Today I received new guidance on the delivery of Physical Education (PE) in schools from the Department of Education.

The Department of Education has told schools the executive restrictions have "significant implications for the delivery of PE within the curriculum". We have been told that PE can only be provided outdoors in a maximum group of 15. The Department of Education is encouraging schools wherever possible and weather permitting to organise outdoor non-contact PE in groups of 15 or less.

The Department of Education said that they fully recognise the significant challenges that this will present for schools in the delivery of the PE curriculum, particularly in regard to class sizes.

I have sought immediate clarification on the new guidance for PE and have raised concerns with the Department of Education on how it relates to class sizes.

We will be continuing to conduct PE but all PE activities will be outdoors, weather permitting and we will be using large outdoor spaces. Children will participate in non-contact Physical Education and the Daily Mile. We feel that Physical Education is a vital outlet for fun, fitness, reducing stress and anxiety and facilitating emotional stability.

The Department of Education has now said it is working with other government departments to consider the position of PE in schools and would advise schools immediately if there is any change.

Our pupils should therefore continue to come to school dressed in their PE kit on PE days.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Taylor
