Resurfacing work of the Junior playground and road safety

07 December 2020

Dear parents and carers,

Resurfacing work of the Junior playground

As highlighted in the December newsletter our Junior playground will be resurfaced from Monday 7th December to Friday 11th December. Separate information has already been sent via Seesaw to P1, P4 and P7 parents and carers about a slight alteration to pick up and collection doors/times from Monday 7th December to Friday 11th December.

Please take due care and caution when moving around the school grounds next week as there will be contractors onsite resurfacing the playground and path areas. There also may be contractors vehicles parked on Queenora Avenue. Therefore we recommend that those parent/carers arriving by car aim to park slightly further away from school and walk with your child(ren) so that it eases traffic congestion. Extra car parking is available at the Warren on Old Coach Rd and in Convention Avenue.

  • P1 pupils should enter school at the slightly later time of 9.00am and via the Queenora entrance doors. P1 pupils will exit school at 2.00pm but via the Queenora doors. The slightly later timings are required as P2 also use the Queenora doors for drop off and collection. Therefore, in an attempt to keep class bubbles separate we have altered the P1 timings slightly for one week only.
  • P4 pupils should enter school at the normal time of 8.55am but via the fire escape doors at the back of the assembly hall. P4 pupils will exit school at the normal time of 3.00pm but via the fire escape doors at the back of the assembly hall. To access the fire escape doors at the back of the assembly hall head to the polytunnel area from either the Senior playground or from the back of the Nursery Unit.
  • P7 pupils should enter school at the normal time of 8.45am but via the main front door. P7 pupils will exit school at the normal time of 2.50pm but via the main front door.
  • All other pupils should enter and exit school at the normal times using their designated doors.

It is important that pupils do not arrive at school too early as there is no adult supervision outdoors in the morning time. Often I am out in the playground in the morning times but I often move between the different designated doors.

Road safety around school

We are aware that the traffic around school can become very congested at drop off and collection times. Please drive carefully and be mindful not to park across a local resident’s driveway to allow them access to their own property. Please also ensure the 'Keep Clear' sign on Central Avenue is clear at all times.

We are currently working in collaboration with the Road Service and the PSNI in relation to traffic and road safety. We have made an application for increased signage for motorists and other traffic calming strategies. The PSNI will be delivering an educational talk to our primary school pupils on 17th December about road safety and keeping safe whilst travelling by foot and by car.

If possible, we recommend that those parent/carers arriving by car aim to park slightly further away from school and walk with your child(ren) so they are maintaining social distancing from others and it eases traffic congestion. This will be especially important next week as we will also have contractors vehicles parked onsite.

We would also like to ask parents collecting their children to support the school in encouraging pupils to practice good road safety and take due care and diligence when crossing roads. This is to ensure the health and safety of everyone. We thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Taylor
