SHARED EDUCATION

I am pleased to report that an application, submitted jointly by Portstewart and St. Colum’s Primary Schools, for entry into the Shared Education Project has been successful! The Shared Education programme is supported by the European Union’s “Peace IV Programme” and is structured to allow schools to forge meaningful links between children of different cultures, religions and social backgrounds.

For the remainder of the 2017-2018 school year our participation will feature the children in P5, P6 and P7 becoming engaged in a range of projects with their peers from St. Colum’s Primary School. In broad terms the topics to be covered are:

P5 Exploring and Discovering our Local Area

P6 Health/Fitness and Sport Awareness to include the sampling of cricket, hockey, hurling, soccer, Gaelic football and rugby

P7 Tourism and Conservation

The topics selected, and the planning required to deliver them, have been chosen and designed by the appropriate teachers of both schools and found to be suitable by the Shared Education Team.

To allow the project to be managed and brought to fruition before the end of this school year, work on projects will commence next week with icebreaker sessions held in both schools. The work chosen for our shared activities may require children being transported by coach to selected sites. When these trips are to occur you will, of course, receive notification and your permission will be sought. However, at present we require your permission to include your child in the Shared Education Programme which will involve, initially, a number of meetings with peers from St. Colum’s in one or other of the two schools.

Please complete the reply slip and return to school by Friday 26th January.
