Portstewart Primary and St. Colum’s Primary Schools’ have been chosen as finalists in the prestigious Rolls Royce Science Prize 2016 and as a result we are embarking on a joint Science and Technology project called ‘Marvellous Movers’. We have support from Rolls Royce, both in an advisory and financial role, for the duration of the project.
Through this project, the children in each year group, P1 – P7, will work in small groups to make moving vehicles. As we are both ‘Eco Schools’, with a strong interest in reducing our impact on our local environment, the children will focus on using recyclable materials to make their vehicles. In addition, we will be encouraging the Key Stage 2 children to think about how they could power their vehicles with a renewable source of energy.
The children from both schools will be heavily involved with this project for the entire school year and as such both schools will be working closely together.
Our project commenced on Tuesday 27th September with ‘Ice Breaking’ sessions to allow the children to get to know each other.
